The Royal Mail is always on strike, stuff is always going missing or not delivered, and overall its just unreliable.
But why isnt a new company being created offering the same services?
For example there are loads of different chains of supermarkets, but why not general postal mail? The Royal Mail is in crisis 24/7 - Why isnt their a new mail delivering service being made?
For most nations, only one postal delivery service is used by the government, otherwise, chaos would ensue: How will postage rates be set? Will one company charge more than another? Should a rural carrier charge more than a city carrier? Will wages, etc, come out of taxes or private funding? If a private company goes on strike, will the gov't be able to enter its facilities so that gov't workers can deliver it? And would said workers cross picket lines to do so? This is also the reason why there are relatively few package delivery services around the world.
Regardless, the link below seems to indicate that the Royal Mail is now competing with rivals, so you got your wish about new companies, but, RM still services the majority of postal customers in the UK, so any changes will be sometime in the future, if at all. Keep in mind that the vast majority of postal workers - - private or gov't - - belong to one or other union, and, as is the case with many union, may have a "sympathy" strike with their fellows, so privatizing may not work, in that regard.
